Puthuppally bypoll: UDF, NDA candidates make political statement with election deposits

Kottayam: Candidates of major political parties filed their nominations for the Puthupally bypoll on Thursday. UDF candidate Chandy Oommen and NDA candidate G Lijinlal filed their nominations on Thursday while LDF candidate Jaick C Thomas submitted his papers a day ago. Interestingly, the candidates made a political statement with the election deposit that has to be submitted with the nomination. Oommen received the election deposit of Rs 10,001 from the mother of former CPI(M) leader COT Naseer. Naseer was convicted for throwing a stone at Oommen Chandy during a CPI(M) protest while he was the Chief Minister. Naseer, who later split with CPI(M), had publicly apologised to Chandy. Before leaving for filing nominations, Lijin visited Malliyoor Sree MahaGanapathy Temple in Kottayam district. Lijin received the election deposit from the temple priest of Malliyoor Ganapathi temple. The move came at a time when NDA is planning to raise the remarks of Speaker AN Shamseer in the campaign. BJP state president K Surendran who accompanied Lijin, said that NDA was fighting against CPI(M) which has made the anti-Hindu remarks and Congress which did not find any need for the Speaker to apologise on the issue. LDF candidate Jaick C Thomas submitted his nomination on Wednesday. An election convention of LDF was held in Puthuppally on Wednesday.
