Karnataka govt orders probe in ’40 per cent’ corruption allegations during previous BJP govt
The Karnataka government has formed a committee led by a retired judge of the High Court HN Nagamohan Das to probe the ’40 per cent allegations made by the state contractors association president D Kempanna against the previous BJP government. The Congress-led government has asked the committee to submit a report within 30 days. The probe was ordered based on the letters submitted to the then Opposition leader and now Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in 2021 and 2022 by the contractors. The government has asked the committee to probe the ’40 per cent’ charge made by the contractors among other allegations. It has also directed the committee to conduct inquiries into whether the projects were approved legally, the quality of work done, verify if the cost of projects was escalated, any projects which were not done but bills were cleared, and procedures followed during the tender process among others. The previous BJP government was under fire from the contractors and the then Opposition Congress after it was accused of demanding a ’40 per cent’ commission to clear the bills. The Congress in its manifesto had said that it would investigate the allegations if it is voted to power.
