Revealed: The one bit of Matildas World Cup merchandise that Aussies can’t get enough of – as sales skyrocket by an incredible 2,650 per cent Huge wave of support for national team Grounds sold out, incredible TV viewing figures WATCH: ‘It’s All Kicking Off’ – Episode 1 – Mail Sport’s brand new football show By Shayne Bugden For Daily Mail Australia and Dan Cancian For Daily Mail Australia Published: 22:00 EDT, 15 August 2023 | Updated: 22:00 EDT, 15 August 2023 The wave of support for the Matildas during their amazing run at the World Cup has seen the team sell out some of the biggest stadiums in the country and smash the AFL and NRL when it comes to TV viewing figures – and now Aussies are going berserk for one piece of team merchandise. Figures from online shopping site eBay show sales of Matildas scarves has shot up by an incredible 2650 per cent since the team’s incredible penalty shootout win over France last Saturday. And the skyrocketing demand for Tillies gear doesn’t stop there, with sales of the team’s jersey up 450 per cent in the last two weeks, beanies up 225 per cent and soccer balls up 50 per cent. Sam Kerr and her teammates have sold out every ground they’ve played in during the World Cup and their victory over Les Bleues in the quarter finals was watched by 8.8million Aussies, making it the country’s biggest sports ratings hit since Cathy Freeman’s Olympics triumph in 2000. Aussies can’t get enough of Sam Kerr and her teammates as they snap up tickets to matches and break records for TV viewing figures (pictured, Matildas fans watch the quarter final against France last Saturday) Your browser does not support iframes. The news about fans clamouring for Matildas scarves comes hot on the heels of revelations that they can’t buy the jersey of penalty shootout hero goalie Mackenzie Arnold. Arnold saved three penalties as Australia beat France to set up the semi-final against England in Sydney. But Matildas supporters wishing to buy Arnold’s No.18 jersey are unable to do so, because the manufacturer has not made them available for sale. While the home and away strips of all 20 outfield Matilda players are available, goalkeeper jerseys aren’t on sale. That means fans wanting to purchase Arnold’s jersey – or that of squad goalkeepers Teagan Micah and Lydia Williams – have to settle for their name and number on the back of a green and gold or blue jersey. Sales of Matildas scarves have shot up an incredible 2,650 per cent since they beat Les Bleues in that famous penalty shootout (pictured, a fan watches the quarter final) Matildas diehards are snapping up jerseys in huge numbers – but they can’t buy hero goalie Mackenzie Arnold’s No.18 top (pictured) Conversely, goalkeeper jerseys for men’s team and both international and club levels are available for sale on both Nike and Adidas websites. The Matildas aren’t the only team affected by the issue, as Nike hasn’t made goalkeepers jerseys available across any of the teams it manufactures kits for. ‘We work with FIFA and the individual federations to determine what assortment and particular player jerseys go on sale based on several factors, including demand in some markets,’ a Nike spokeswoman said. The Nike statement added that a number of new products aimed specifically at women athletes had also been launched. Adidas has also not made goalkeeper jerseys available for purchase. A petition highlighting the issue and looking to convince Adidas and Nike to change their stance has gathered almost 40,000 signatures at the time of writing. Former England international Carly Telford took to social media to point out the absurdity of the situation after three goalkeepers were named Player of the Match in their Round of 16 matches. ‘Feel like the Goalkeepers took this issue personally and are saying look what your all missing out on… AND IM HERE FOR IT,’ she tweeted.
