A narrow 2-1 Champions League third round qualifying round lead from the first leg should have been wider. And Michael Beale's men almost paid the price in the first half against Servette. They conceded once after an excellent Jack Butland save before goalscorer Dereck Kutesa's decision not to square the ball for Jérémy Guillemenot was the only reason they weren't facing a second half salvage job. A Danilo sitter could have been one for the ages had captain James Tavernier not spared his blushes by nodding home a few minutes after the restart. It was a better Rangers that emerged from the tunnel and they should again have made it a more comfortable night for themselves. Cyriel Dessers headed over before seeing an effort touched on to the post. It didn't matter in the end, but those sort of misses might against PSV in the next round and oher players may not be able to pull rabbits out of the hat once again. Rangers player ratings JACK BUTLAND: Showed the safe pair of hands Rangers needed on a stressful night. Couldn’t get near Kutesa’s opener but the two huge first-half saves he pulled off were vital to Beale’s men progressing. 8 JAMES TAVERNIER: Skipper hasn’t quite been himself so far this season but came up with another precious Euro goal to pave the way to the play-offs. 7 CONNOR GOLDSON: Gers’ Euro stalwart had a couple of shaky moments during the first period but composed himself at the break and stood firm in the face of Swiss pressure. 7 JOHN SOUTTAR: Misread a long ball into to Crivelli and paid the price as Servette moved ahead after working the ball to Kutesa. Refused to panic after that mistake and helped Goldson handle Servette threat. 6 BORNA BARISIC: Has had the fans on his back lately but fair play, he put on a flawless display capped off by a fabulous cross for Tavernier’s goal. 8 Danilo looks dejected after missing a chance RYAN JACK: Back in the starting line-up after being given the weekend off. Refused to lose his cool as Servette threatened to take command in the first half. 7 NICO RASKIN: Little Belgian terrier bit into tackles but his work with the ball was a little sloppy at times. Improved in second half. Simply can't fault his effort levels though as he ran himself ragged all the way to the final whistle. 8 JOSE CIFUENTES: First European start and certainly looks comfortable on this stage. Deserved an assist for the sumptuous ball he rolled across goal for Danilo. 7 TODD CANTWELL: Quickly proving he’s the beating heart of this Rangers team. Always ready to take the ball under pressure and positive with his passing when given space to lift his head. 8 ABDALLAH SIMA: Given the nod ahead of Cyriel Dessers. Not much end product from the on-loan Brighton man but ran himself ragged for an hour in the sweltering heat. 6 DANILO: Trusted to take on the sole striking role for the first time but failed to deliver as he pulled off an incredible miss after ball was put on a plate for him to tap in at the back post. 4 Subs: SAM LAMMERS (for Sima, 61): Provided a calmness on the ball as Gers looked to negotiate the final stages. 3 CYRIEL DESSERS (for Danilo, 61): Could’t take a huge opening to win over his doubters as he fired against the post. 2 DUJON STERLING (for Cifuentes, 84): Helped Gers stay strong as Servette piled on the pressure. 2 KIERAN DOWELL (for Cantwell, 90): Thrown on for injury time. 1 Story Saved You can find this story in My Bookmarks.
