How Man City should line up vs Sevilla in UEFA Super Cup
Pep Guardiola will be without three key Manchester City players in the UEFA Super Cup vs Sevilla on Wednesday. City are in Athens to take on Europa League winners Sevilla after the Blues won the Champions League , and they can secure a first trophy of the season in the form of the Super Cup. However, City have travelled to Greece without injured pair Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne, while Bernardo Silva didn't travel through illness. John Stones missed the Burnley win with a minor injury and is part of the squad for the Super Cup, but may not be risked. Joao Cancelo hasn't travelled. Guardiola has suggested he will wait before handing a full debut to Josko Gvardiol, while Mateo Kovacic could use his experience of winning three Super Cups if he is selected. After some promising pre-season form, this is a chance in a big game for him to show either that he can replace Riyad Mahrez or that he can thrive at another club. Simon's XI Phil Foden replaced De Bruyne in Istanbul and can lay down a marker for that spot again, alongside the assured Kovacic. Jack Grealish is the obvious/pretty much only choice on the left. I’d be interested in seeing Gvardiol and Aymeric Laporte start where they left off with their brief cameo at Burnley, an intriguing pair of lefties next to each other; but as Guardiola has said Gvardiol is unlikely, Lewis could be the man. Kyle Walker should be captain again and Ederson deserves to start given his performances played a large part in City qualifying for this match. Pick your best starting XI here: Joe Bray With reports of interest in Stefan Ortega from Bayern Munich, it could help to start the German as the designated 'cup' goalkeeper, just like in the Community Shield. Ederson usually has the shirt in Europe, but Ortega has played in the Champions League and these are ideal games to play him in. With Dias out and Stones doubtful, I would move Nathan Ake over to the left and hand a full debut to Gvardiol. It may be harsh on Laporte, but Gvardiol needs games to adapt to the City system, and while this is a final it is also not of the same importance as a Premier League game against Newcastle, for example. Joe's XI Kovacic should replace De Bruyne, allowing Julian Alvarez to continue behind Erling Haaland. Foden should play on the right after he did so well there vs Sevilla in the Champions League group stage last season. Grealish can get a recall on the left. Dan Murphy City are desperate to get their hands on the Super Cup for the first time in their history so a strong team will be named. But there will also be several changes, some of which will be enforced. The biggest of all is De Bruyne who is now sidelined. Foden should come into his attacking midfield role after playing out wide at Turf Moor with Kovacic also joining Rodri in the middle. Dan's XI That would leave room for Grealish to start on the left and with Bernardo Silva unwell, Palmer could come in to start on the right. Haaland should lead the line. It would be good for Laporte to get a start with it looking increasingly likely he'll be staying at City. I'd start Lewis at right-back in order to rest Walker.
