England lifted the European Women's Championship last summer, beating Spain on their way to the final as they came out 2-1 victors in the quarter-final stage . Wiegman will be hoping that she can lead her side to victory once again when they face the Spanish team. She will be joined by her backroom staff on the bench as they have done all they can to prepare the Lionesses for the monumental occasion. Mailsport have taken a deep dive into those behind the scenes, who are part of Wiegman's backroom staff with the national team. Sarina Wiegman's first encountered assistant manager Arjan Veurink in the Netherlands Geraint Twose worked with England’s Men’s U15s before taking up his role with the Lionesses Darren Ward worked with Sheffield United for five years and played a big role in Dean Henderson’s rise to becoming an England international Arjan Veurink - Assistant manager Wiegman first encountered Veurink when they both managed separate teams in the women’s top flight in the Netherlands. Wiegman liked the way his team played but she also respected Veurink’s character. The pair started working together when Wiegman became manager of the Netherlands in 2017 and have continued to do so with England. Veurink plays a big role in tactics and was responsible for the Lionesses’ switch to a 3-4-1-2 formation during the group stage. Geraint Twose - Assistant Twose formerly worked with Cardiff City’s academy for 17 years before joining the Football Association in 2013 as a youth coach developer. The Welshman worked with England’s Men’s U15s before taking up his role with the Lionesses. He has been involved in two European Championships while this is his second World Cup. Darren Ward - Goalkeeper Coach Another Welshman, Ward worked with Sheffield United for five years and played a big role in Dean Henderson’s rise to becoming an England international. Ward joined the Lionesses in 2021 and is highly thought of by all of the goalkeepers in the squad. He was key to Mary Earps’ preparation for the round of 16 penalty shoot-out with Nigeria. Ritan Mehta (right) is a club doctor at Watford and Reading and joined the FA in 2014 Sarina Wiegman (left) with Anja Van Ginhoven (centre) and Kay Cossington (right) Ritan Mehta - Head of medical Mehta has worked in football for 14 years and joined the FA in 2014. As well as working with the Lionesses, he is a team doctor for the men’s and women’s development teams, a club doctor at Watford and is also a club doctor at Reading. Kate Hays - Sports Psychologist Hays joined the FA in 2021 after working with the English Institute of Sport in a similar role for more than seven years. She has worked as a sports psychologist with a range of different teams for over 20 years. Anja van Ginhoven - General Manager Wiegman saw Van Ginhoven as a key person to bring with her from the Netherlands to England. She previously worked as media officer for the Dutch Football Association. She was heavily involved in choosing England’s base camp in Terrigal and ensuring they had the best facilities and location in order to be able to compete at this World Cup. Kay Cossington - Head of Women’s Football Cossington has been working at the FA for over 18 years and has played a huge role in helping bring through some of the talent in the current squad. Works closely with Van Ginhoven and is vital to the work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure the women’s team has the set-up they need.
