On the day of the crash, Margaret and Francis Coe heard the collision and called emergency services before rushing to help. They managed to pry the back of Mr Osborn's car open with a crowbar and waved down passerby, Adam Locke. The trio were working to keep Mr Osborn calm and stifle his bleeding when Mrs Coe made a disturbing discovery in the grass near the crash - Mr Osborn's hand. Moments later paramedics, including NSW Ambulance Senior Constable Sonja Scott, were on the scene. Police bodycam shows an officer asking for help storing the hand, saying: 'Mate, have you got an Esky or something we can use at the moment?' RACQ LifeFlight flew Mr Osborn to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital where he underwent several surgeries to reattach his hand. Surgeons had a six-hour window before the severed hand was unviable. Advanced care paramedic Nolan Jones said the fast actions of emergency services and witnesses 'saved Peter's life, not just his arm'. Mr Osborn is still undergoing rehabilitation for his hand but was able to continue working as a draftsman with his fully-functional hand.
