Skipper Sam Kerr and her team now finish their home tournament as the fourth-best side on the planet - easily the best result for any Aussie football team, men's or women's, in the World Cup. Tony Gustavsson's side stopped the nation and defied all the odds as they sold out stadiums and set TV ratings records. Here's how Daily Mail Australia rated every star who took to the field for Australia... MACKENZIE ARNOLD: 8 'Macca' made headlines after her incredible performance in the quarterfinals against France, where she saved three penalties in the longest World Cup shootout ever. Arnold was also immense for the side in every other game, and her four clean sheets before the 3-1 loss to England in the semi-final were clear evidence of that fact. The 29-year-old West Ham goalkeeper was a pillar for the side defensively, and her heroics will be remembered for a long time to come. Arnold was brilliant for Australia throughout the tournament ELLIE CARPENTER: 5.5 Carpenter had a solid World Cup, with plenty of her trademark bursts down the wing. She had a poor night against England in the semi-final, but backed up to perform well against Sweden on Saturday night. The talented 23-year-old defender played a lot of minutes during the tournament after coming back from a career-threatening injury in 2021. CLARE HUNT: 7 Hunt only made her debut for Australia in February, yet six months later she produced a world-class performance in the history-making tournament. Hunt was calm under pressure in every game and made countless last-ditch tackles to shut down attacks on goal. The Western Sydney Wanderers defender will surely have lots of job offers from all around the world after her campaign. CLARE POLKINGHORNE: 5 Polkinghorne, Australia's all-time highest-capped player, just made history by competing in her fifth World Cup. 'Polks' was calm under pressure at the back when she got on the field and put in a good performance overall. STEPH CATLEY: 6.5 Vice-Captain Catley has enjoyed a hugely successful campaign with the Matildas and her penalty heroics against Ireland will be forever remembered by Aussie footy fans. Catley was characteristically defensively sound again and was provided a constant threat with her left foot deliveries throughout the tournament. HAYLEY RASO: 7 Real Madrid's Hayley Raso stepped up when the Matildas needed her most to score twice against Canada when the chips were down. She was relentless in attack and gave nothing less than 110 per cent each time she stepped on the park. Australia's leading goalscorer in the tournament had some frustrating night's in the last couple of games as she was forced to do a lot of defensive work. Hayley Raso was relentless in attack for the Matildas throughout the campaign KATRINA GORRY: 7 'Mini' had her 100th appearance for the Matildas in the semifinal against England, which speaks to her longstanding importance in the side. Gorry was everywhere for the Matildas, and her composure on the ball proved crucial time and again with excellent passes. The tiny midfielder was the definition of grit and seemed to cover every blade of grass over the last few weeks. KYRA COONEY-CROSS: 7.5 Former England striker Ian Wright tweeted 'Cooney-Cross bro' during the Ireland game for a very good reason. The gutsy 21-year-old midfielder hardly put a foot wrong all campaign dictating the pace of the game and pulling the strings with her pin-point passes. The youngster was running on empty by the Sweden match but will no doubt have earned plenty of admirers overseas. CAITLIN FOORD: 7.5 The Arsenal forward was forced to shoulder a much bigger burden after the withdrawal of Sam Kerr before the first match, but caused huge headaches for the defences with her pace and aggression. Her combination play with Catley was exceptional and she was most dangerous out wide with a bit of space. She scored a memorable goal against Denmark after latching onto a brilliant Mary Fowler through ball. SAM KERR: 7 Arguably the most popular person in Australia at the moment, Kerr wowed everyone with one of the goals of the tournament after returning from injury against England. The superstar striker always looked dangerous when she had the ball and proved in this tournament that she is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world. Kerr stunned with one of the goals of the tournament against England MARY FOWLER: 6.5 The youngest player in the side may someday prove to be the greatest, after a brilliant World Cup with many memorable moments. Fowler's control of the ball is peerless within the side and her runs through the middle of the park gave defenders headaches. Mary Fowler's touch on the ball and ability to glide past defenders was a pleasure to watch ALANA KENNEDY: 6.5 The towering centre-back won plenty of ball during the tournament and stopped countless attacks. She unfortunately missed the final couple of games after suffering delayed concussion symptoms stemming from the match against France. EMILY VAN EGMOND: 6 Provided attacking spark when she was on the pitch with some lovely touches on the ball. The Matildas veteran was probably the best player on the park in the loss to Nigeria early in the tournament. CORTNEE VINE: 6.5 The red-headed speedster looked electric when she came on the pitch and wrote her name into Australian footballing folklore with her winning penalty against France. ALEXANDRA CHIDIAC: 5 The former Melbourne City star did little wrong when she got on the pitch. COURTNEY NEVIN: 5 The Leicester City star looked solid in the few minutes we saw of her during the tournament.
