Mahmoud Abbas shooting: Potential motive for why Sydney lawyer was shot outside his Greenacre home revealed Criminal lawyer Mahmoud Abbas was shot July 26 He was previously abducted and assaulted in 2019 READ MORE: Neighbours shocked after gangland shooting By Ashley Nickel For Daily Mail Australia Published: 07:58 BST, 19 August 2023 | Updated: 07:58 BST, 19 August 2023 e-mail 27 shares The shooting of a high-profile criminal lawyer last month could be linked to the same underworld figures who abducted him and shaved his head in 2019. NSW Police claim to have found a possible motive over the alleged attempted assassination of gangland lawyer Mahmoud Abbas who was shot outside his Greenacre home, in the city's southwest, on July 26. They allege evidence found on Mr Abbas' electronic devices link his recent shooting to his abduction in 2019. Last month the Saturday Telegraph revealed Mr Abbas was abducted, violently bashed and had his head and eyebrows shaved as a 'warning' from gangland figures. It's understood those responsible took photos of Mr Abbas' shaved head and shared them around underworld circles following the attack. Police believe the shooting of criminal lawyer Mahmoud Abbas (above) is linked to his 2019 abduction and assault Mr Abbas was shot outside his Greenacre home on July 26 (pictured, paramedics treating Mr Abbas after the attack) Police are aware of the incident despite the fact Mr Abbas did not make a formal report. Detectives only had access to Mr Abbas' laptop and phone for a short amount of time before the lawyer won a legal challenge to have them returned . He told the Supreme Court earlier this week he needed the devices for his business as they contained sensitive information about his clients. However, officers said they were able to link the two attacks by analysing the devices during that time. 'In June 2019 Mr Abbas was abducted by a person or persons unknown to police,' police wrote in documents tendered to court, the Saturday Telegraph reports. 'During the abduction, Mr Abbas was violently assaulted and his eyebrows and head were shaved as a "warning". 'Following the abduction, Mr Abbas refused to provide police with any statement or information to further the investigation into potential suspects or motives for the crime. 'Given the intelligence received so far, police are working under the assumption that the abduction and the shooting are related, due to Mr Abbas' lack of assistance with both NSWPF investigations and the suspected involvement of similar parties.' Detectives believe Mr Abbas' clients may know who was behind the abduction and shooting. Mr Abbas has undergone three surgeries and had his kidney removed since the shooting last month (pictured, Mr Abbas' Greenacre home) Mr Abbas suffered extensive injuries in the shooting but is expected to make a full recovery. He has undergone three surgeries and had his kidney removed after a bullet shot through it. Another bullet narrowly missed Mr Abbas' kneecap. Daily Mail Australia does not suggest Mr Abbas hasany links to criminal activity or wrongdoing.
