A video posted on TikTok showed a family taking their grandmother to Karen's Diner in Sheffield - a restaurant where staff are intentionally rude to customers. In a play on the internet phenomenon that middle-aged women who complain and are rude are 'Karens', the chain restaurant, which has branches around the UK as well as Austrailia, Indonesia , New Zealand and the USA, treats its customers with disdain on purpose. The chain's website describes it as 'an interactive diner and an absurdly fun experience' - you get waited upon by rude waiters and forced to play a variety of 'stupid games.' However, one poor grandmother had no idea what she was in for when her family took her for dinner - and was gobsmacked by her first experience of Karen's Diner. A video has gone viral on TikTok of a family taking their unsuspecting nan out for a meal at Karen's Diner in Sheffield In the video, captioned: 'taking my nan to Karen's diner for the first time' the unsuspecting grandmother enters the restaurant and is met with someone swearing as soon as she walks through the door. Horrified, she says: 'Excuse me, watch your language,' pointing her finger at the waitress. To the grandmother's surprise, the waitress comes back by shouting: 'what you gonna do about it?' and shockingly tells her to 'shut the f*** up.' Riled up by the waitress's attitude, the grandmother replies: 'If I were younger I'd knock you', to which the waitress plays along. The grandmother then reiterated: 'I bloody would, yeah' before arguing she was a 'paying customer'. This family's poor grandma had no idea what she was in for, she thought she was visiting a regular restaurant and couldn't believe what she was hearing Stifling her laughter, another family member put their arm around their grandmother, as a male member of staff chimed in and told her to 'shut the f*** up'. Unable to believe what's going on, the grandmother turns around to her family and asks: 'Who's picked this bloody place?' Another waiter then hurls another insult at the grandmother, at which point she has had enough of the alternative dining experience and the conflict begins to escalate. Eventually, it becomes clear to the grandmother that the point of the restaurant is to be rude to customers. As the penny drops, she exclaims: 'You're joking!' The waitress responds: 'Welcome to Karen's diner. Come on you silly old b****' - at which point the family erupts in laughter. Thankfully, the grandmother is a great sport after realising what is happening, and she continues to have a pleasant meal. The waitress says 'Funny that because it's the busiest restaurant in Sheffield believe it or not.' Still not getting it, nan replied 'Well you must be dragging them off the street.' Finally, the waiter says 'Switch your f***ing head on and figure out where you are love,' with the waitress adding 'have a look where you are, they've stitched you up here nan.' The penny finally drops as she exclaims 'you're joking!' and realises where she is. The video has reached over 2.2 million views almost 2000 comments, with mixed opinions on what happened The woman's granddaughter, who posted the TikTok video, assured viewers in the caption of the video that her grandmother enjoyed the experience after she realised what was happening. By the end of the video, the lady had a smile on her face, even as she was being teased by Karen's staff. The video has reached over 2.2 million views almost 2000 comments, with mixed opinions on what happened. One person wrote: 'Nan was a baddie in her time,' while another added: 'This is hilarious, I bet the staff was trying not to laugh. (sic)' Another viewer wrote: 'I feel the lady in the pink and white dress was ensuring nana didn't swing a punch.' Someone joked: 'Granny was ready to take on all the staff for the whole family.' However, not everyone found it funny, including one viewer who wrote: 'These places feel like just a fad that will die out fast.' Another said: 'We went to the one in Birmingham and were very disappointed, they must play up when they know their gonna be on social media,' calling the Brum restaurant 'very tame' in comparison. This comes after a teen and his grandparents were kicked out of the Manchester branch for calling the waitress a 'fat sl**.' Despite dishing it out, the restaurant does have it's rules - the teen and his family were forced to pay the £25 drinks bill and leave because rules given to customers upon entry tells them banter doesn't extend to 'body shaming'.
