The brutal fight broke out last night in Westhoughton, Greater Manchester after Bolton Wanderers beat Wigan Athletic 4-0 on Saturday. A video filmed by an onlooker shows several yobs throwing punches at each other, while other kicked and wrestled in the shocking scenes. The violence left one man in hospital with injuries. Two men were arrested but were released on bail, while a Section 34 Dispersal Order was issued, to force the brawling group of up to 50 people to leave the area. They cannot return to Westhoughton for 48 hours. One woman, who was innocent passer-by, got caught up in the brawl and was pushed up against a wall, cowering from the indiscriminately wild punches being thrown. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that an investigation has been launched to locate and identify the men responsible for violent disorder last night. Councillor Arthur Price, who represents Westhoughton North on Bolton Council, was stunned when he saw the horrific scenes on social media. He told the Manchester Evening News: 'It's something we definitely don't want to see again. It's just not acceptable behaviour, it has endangered everybody that's on Market Street. I've watched the video, there are innocent people involved in that. I saw one were a woman was against a wall trying to get past. 'I have to say the response that we got from the police was very good. They soon had it under control.' Cops confirmed they were called out in response to the 'mindless violence' that erupted around 4.30pm yesterday. Bolton's District Commander, Steph Parker said: 'This kind of mindless violence will not be tolerated in Bolton. If it is proven to be linked to the Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic game, we will be seeking banning orders on those identified, as well as prosecuting them.' A spokesperson from GMP said: 'At approximately 4.30pm last night, Saturday 19 August 2023, GMP received calls regarding a large-scale disturbance on Market Street in Westhoughton. 'A Section 34 Dispersal Order, under the Anti-Social Behaviour & Policing Act 2014, was issued, to ensure the group - of up to 50 people - left the area. They cannot return to Westhoughton for 48 hours. 'Colleagues from NWAS attended and a man was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries, not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. 'Two men were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and have since been released on bail pending further enquiries'.
